Listening with Howard

From the overmuch brilliance
I stop to listen.
New bench. Lakeside.
Willow branches hiss.
Swallows chitter up high.
Geese trumpet a disturbance.
Swan’s turbulent thrust.
Redwing’s reproach.
Catfish plip at the surface.
Bicycles boom the walk-bridge.
Distant Sunday matin rings.
Subliminal cicaida drones.
Toddler in stroller
Renders the descant,
Gleefully laughing.
July, everywhere
In recognition.
Rising to collect my things.
A brass plaque, at my back
All the while:
“Howard Roth- 1923-2006,
Watching the Ducks.”
We’ll do this
Again, Howard.
