Whither Security?

The common places

Experience dread

The market, the park

The office of commerce

The soccer field, the concert.

And hand-in-hand lovers

Or families

Run from flash and rumble

Pop and scream

Sirens arriving.

Where is the villain?

Does he breathe my air?

Study my lessons?

Watch my children grow?

Love my wife of precious years?

Perhaps his clothes are odd

His skin tone the subject of rumour

His firearm culture inbred

His dreams fanatical.

But he with his have done the deed.

People fall from buildings

Buildings fall from footings

Bleachers empty in an instant

Entertainment seekers

Get shocks unimagined.

And a strange sport follows

With microphones and cameras

Lusting for “first” and “just-in”

And “comments at eleven”.

Public figures speak of

“Thoughts and prayers

And we turn crouching

To closed places

Where once there had been

Open spaces.
