Heavy Horse Event

Mighty feet and haunches

Submitting to reins’ touch

And outcries from a Friend.

Shaking fields of battle

Breaking fields of promise

Jangling now in trappings

Of sport and skill.

Delighting in gentle drizzle

For thirsty July grasses.

Not often seen or understood.

Hooved feet thought ponderous

Flash and prance

In feathered delight.

Each player knows his part

In pull, direct or turn

Stops and poses. Reverses.

Twitching muscles evict flies

As Harry’s wife comes close

With loving words and pats.

Meekness on display

In brutal controlled strength.
